Whilst The Headache Clinic prefers to offer patients non-drug treatment rather than medication, some patients choose to be treated with drugs. Two types of medication can be used in the treatment of migraines and headaches: "RESCUE" and "PREVENTIVE" medication.
"RESCUE" medication is consumed to treat the pain once the headache or migraine has already started. These medications pose a serious threat as their repeated use causes a condition called "Medication Overuse Headache" (MOH).
"PREVENTIVE" medication is taken daily, even when the sufferer does not have a headache, in order to prevent headaches and migraines. There are various commonly prescribed drugs available to prevent headaches but, due to side effects or their inefficacy, most patients stop using them. Consequently, they are usually prescribed to severe chronic sufferers as a last resort.
